Helichrysum Splendidum: From African Medicine to Modern Aromatherapy

Helichrysum— as we know it in Western culture— is a plant steeped in rich, African medicinal roots, referred to natively as “Imphepho.” These hardy stalks of silvery leaves and brilliant yellow blooms are gathered, dried, and most commonly burned in rituals held to communicate with the ancestors. Additionally, spiritual seekers may chew the plant for a similar purpose, brew it as a tea, or place it under their pillow to enhance the dream state. Many users report a sense of peace and tranquility paired with an opened psychic state after ingesting this plant.

Such a meaningful practice leads one to wonder how then we may also benefit from and honor this plant medicine as an essential oil? With a scent that is fresh, herbaceous, and slightly balsamic, Helichrysum Splendidum is indeed a rare, precious, and exotic variety of the Helichrysum family, one of the few that qualifies for use as Imphepho.

In modern aromatherapy, many people call upon this oily ally to induce clearer communication between the 4th and 5th chakras— our heart, and our throat. For how better should we hope to communicate in this world than through the purity of an open heart? Surely these are two important frequencies that must have been in tune for those ritual, African diviners to communicate with the ancestors.

Physically speaking, our heart and our lungs live around the same 4th chakra area. Helichrysum Splendidum Essential Oil is a Helichrysum variety especially useful for respiratory health as it reduces inflammation, subdues congestion, and relieves infection in the lungs.

We may also find that these issues spill over into the throat/trachea area of the 5th chakra, which carries air in and out of the lungs, and can also potentially host inflammation, infection, or dis-ease. Along with clearing these physical symptoms, we may benefit from using this oil to help clear grief, sadness, trauma, and other uncomfortable energetics that become stored in these parts of the body.
